On Sunday July 15 a kayaker drowned in this strainer, at a flow of 750cfs. In this picture the flow is 300cfs. Note that on the left side (river right) of the pier the current is nearly perpendicular to the strainer. On the right side (river left) the current is roughly parallel to the strainer.
